The Price of Bread Coupons On June 23, 1941 we were evacuated all together: my mother, my sister and I to the Chelyabinsk region, Buguruslan district, the village of Panikla, and the collective farm named after Karl Marx where we worked. In 1944 we moved to Buguruslan, where I began to study at a factory school without knowing Russian. After studies I was sent to the city of Chkalov to work at the 47th Leningrad Aviation Plant. I worked there for 3 months, and once during the night shift my bread ration cards and coupons for hot meals were stolen. I Saw People Being Buried in the Sea I am Ion Shleyfman, born on October 26, 1937 in Kiev. My father was a professional artist; he was disabled and worked in “Ukrfoto” organization. Since the beginning of the war Kiev was regularly bombed and my mother was hiding with me at a bomb shelter. I was four years old. Mom took me to the hospital where I had my tongue stitched without anesthesia; after that it was falling out of my mouth for a long time. In August 1941 we were evacuated from Kiev to Kazakhstan. Near the station... Подробнее >>

I Was Led by the Nazis to Be Shot I am Ida Sharovetskaya (nee - Akman). I was born in 1939. In July 1941 I was evacuated from the town of Bershad, Vinnitsa Region in Ukraine. My mother put her six children on the cart and fled from the town under fire of the Nazis. Bershad was bombed by the German planes, they fired on all the time and bombed the flow of refugees. Day and night, they were pursued: I remember the cries of despair, pain, attacks, bombings and death. All the time mom drove the horse and only God saved our lives. Finally, we got to Stalingrad, but the German troops were already there. They took away our cart with horses and all the things we had. They ordered the Jews to stand... Подробнее >>
